NEW ORLEANS – After a 2-0 start to their season, the Tulane women’s basketball squad will hit the road for the first time this season, travelling to Tallahassee for a Thursday, Nov. 19, showdown with No. 6/14 Florida State (0-1). Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. CT and will stream live on ESPN3. Local New Orleans fans can also hear the game on WRBH radio on 88.3 FM with Gus Kattengell on the call.
The Olive and Blue are coming off of a dominant 92-49 victory over Jackson State in which the Wave not only scored 90+ points for the first time since Jan. 11, 2014, but also tied the seventh most rebounds in school history with 56 boards. In addition, for the second straight game, the trio of Kolby Morgan, Leslie Vorpahl and Taylor Emery powered the Green Wave attack with double-digit scoring.
The Tulane trio have been on a tear to start the 2015-16 season, scoring a combined 87 points. Against Jackson State, Morgan recorded her third career 20+ scoring game with 21 points while Vorpahl achieved her first career double-double with 15 points and a career high 10 assists. Furthermore, Emery has been terrific from the floor, leading the squad in field goals made with a combined 12-for-22 effort.
However, to move to 3-0, Tulane will have to knock off a Florida State team that returns four starters from last year’s squad that reached the Elite Eight. Florida State leads the all-time series against Tulane, 12-7, and have been the winners of six straight between the two. Last season, the two programs met up in New Orleans, where the Seminoles took the contest, 65-54.
“Florida State came into New Orleans early last season and were tremendously impressive,” Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. “We battled with them but they dictated a majority of the game. We talked about how it’s an opportunity to play a great team like that on their floor. We’ll be a better team either way coming out of it. We’re now a team that plays against No. 1 UConn twice a year, so the No. 6 team is not the best team on our schedule; so for us, we need to learn how to play with teams like that.”
Florida State will be competing in their first game at home and are coming off of an 82-72 upset vs an unranked Florida Gators squad. Senior center Adut Bulgak, an AP preseason All-America honorable mention, led the way with a 20-point, 14-rebound double-double as three other Seminole players finished in double figures.
If victorious on Thursday, Tulane will be the first team since the 1999-00 season to defeat FSU in its home opener. A win would halt several FSU home streaks, as the Seminoles have won 17 straight inside the Donald L. Tucker Center and 24 straight against non-conference foes.
