Q&A (Pt.1) – Introducing Shaun Johnson

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

While brainstorming topics for this weekly blog, we came up with the idea to highlight the new staff members we’ve added to our team in the past couple of months. We also realized that we had never gotten to interview someone very important who has been around WRBH for quite a bit: Mr. Shaun Johnson. Shaun is our current Volunteer Coordinator, a Studio Engineer four days out of the week and the creator and host of the new WRBH interview program, Audio Portraits. I won’t spoil anymore and let him tell you about himself in his own words:

1. What do you like about working at WRBH?

Honestly, the volunteers are the coolest part. I feel like most of them have become real friends, and I look forward to seeing them every week, just to catch up.

2. How did you first get into sound production?

My dad was a musician. A drummer actually, so we always had a mini studio in our house. So when that day came, for me to choose a college I ran across the “Sound Design” Major, and it felt familiar, like something I had been immersed in my entire life.

3. If you have 5 hours free time to yourself, what do you do?

There’s always a joke that if I ever go “missing” you probably should just check the gym first. I love working out, so it’s become my personal hang out spot. I’m usually there for a few hours then I’ll make my way over to Subway.

4. What are some memorable “Audio Portraits” moments?

The fact that I get to do the show at all is crazy exciting for me…Getting to interview POGO aka Nick Bertke, kinda blew my mind. Me and all my friends are HUGE fans of his, and he gave such a funny down to earth interview. Marcus McAlister was also a lot of fun because it was the only interview I didn’t get to prepare for, it was basically a last minute thing. He was so positive and energetic, it really inspired me to be more “in the moment”.

5. Whats your favorite food and why??

Gumbo. Then probably boiled crawfish. Both cause they are delicious.

6. What’s your favorite beer?

So my go to beer is definitely Blue Moon. However, in Georgia there is a beer called Son of a Peach…amazing.

7. If radio could take you anywhere in the world, where would you want to go?

I feel like Hawaii would be a solid choice. It’s laid back, warm, cultural…I could be happy with that.

8. What’s your favorite book?

When I was a kid in school we had to read a book called “Stormbreaker”…about a kid spy named Alex Rider. Well that book got turned into a series. And even though it’s a kids book series, and I’ve read them all, whenever I need to really relax I go back to Alex Rider stories. I hear so much great literature at WRBH, but those books will always hold a special place for me.

9. What places have you lived?

Born in New Orleans, but I’ve lived in Texas(outside Dallas), Boston, Savannah, San Francisco and New York.

10. Do you have any hidden talents?

It’s weird to think of it as hidden now, but for a LONG time I was determined to be in the NBA. Really. I’ve always been a great shooter. I’m still pretty good, just too heavy, short and slow!
